21 Grams

Rating:★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Drama

I very much enjoyed watching this one; particularly the second time I saw it. During the initial viewing stages I found it somewhat tricky to follow, more so even than some other movies that are made in similar unconventional trait of styles. The scenes are moving forward and backward on multiple planes, and all of these events take place within a relatively short time period interchanging eachother in a chaotic way. Therefore, the physical appearances of the characters never change drastically. Also, the filmmakers chose not to use the most common method of time displacement, color vs. black & white to represent the 'now' and 'before' like in Memento.

After the first twenty minutes or so I was beginning to become discouraged and almost convinced myself that there was no need to continue watching. I remember thinking this is one of the more artsy-artsy film to fulfil the director's ego. Suddenly things began to rapidly fall in place, and before the midway point of the movie I was able to comfortably follow along as the drama unfolded. At this same point I found myself in unfamiliar territory. I was almost anxious for the movie to reach the climax so I could go back to the beginning and associate the earlier scenes with what I was currently watching. I attribute this effect to one of two things, either pure genius on the part of the cast and crew, or the most significant cinematic happy accident of my movie watching life.

Oscar nominations for Naomi Watts and Benicio Del Toro were fully justified. I am a big fan of Naomi who i think do splendidly in every other role she had. I also believe Sean Penn's performance was worthy of a nomination. With his eventual win for the leading role in Mystic River. If you were a fan of "Memento" or "Irreversible" you'll most certainly appreciate the making of "21 Grams". The Story is powerful and touching even if it was told in a somewhat unusual way.

The Shawshank Redemption

Rating:★★★★★
Category:Movies
Genre: Drama

The movie is awe-inspiringly directed, brilliantly written, and whole-heartedly acted by all the cast. Darabont makes a stupendous debut as director with a movie of a quality that he probably will not be able to equal in the rest of his career as proven in Green Mile. And when you think that the writing credits belong to the master of horror himself, Stephen King, you definitely can only be surprised. He managed to write something else other than his fabulous horrors. A touching sensitive drama about friendship, honesty, injustice, and more than everything else, about hope.

The story is narrated by "Red" (Morgan Freeman), who has been inmate of Shawshank Prison for a very long time and is becoming one of its prominent citizens. It is about the life of Andy Dufresne, a new inmate, who with his meticulous and enigmatic nature has change the life of people around Shawshank indefinitely. Red's close observation of this man, down through the long and winding years, provides the way we follow changes and watch his influence growing on those around him, bitter sweet pills he have to swallow during what he denounce as redemption or bad luck for something he might or might not have done in his life. While there is something else lurking, hidden with secrecy, that will only be revealed at the end.

This is one movie that will stay at the top of my list for a very very long time. I've watched it over and over again and I still am amazed by how good the whole aspect in it. Shawshank Redemption is a very enlightening movie that will make you think about many things in your life and what have you done and achieve all this time. I guess every one of you have watched this excellent peace of art, so probably you have the same feeling as I had right now. Too bad this awesome movie do not enter indonesia's theatre showing, so not many people can appreciate the sheer quality of Shawshank Redemption.

If you haven't watch this gem, go and buy the DVD. But if you have, well ... go and watch it again.

Side note : TSR has been dubbed by CNN as the most beloved movie of the 90's. You can read the full article in here.
